My Playgroup

I remember when my son was a year old I signed him up for a playgroup. I knew this group would be just as much for me as it would be for him. We had moved away from family and friends before Little Dude was born. With Big Daddy at work each day I was feeling a lone and isolated.

I found myself in a group of new moms like me. They all had a child around my son’s age. I remember at first thinking we were all such different people. That perhaps out in the real world we would not associate.

How wrong I was.

These women became like family to me. Their friendships I will forever treasure. Together we shared our hopes, dreams and fears as new moms. We battled sleep deprivation, the terrible twos and potty training together.

When I would talk to my out of state family and friends they would often snicker when I would say my playgroup had met that day.

Your playgroup? Don’t you mean Little Dude’s? Aren’t you a little old for a playgroup?

They didn’t get it. They didn’t understand. I couldn’t blame them though. They didn’t know how isolating being a new mom could be. They didn’t know how healing it was to hear other mother’s stories of feeling incompetent. Or knowing I wasn’t a lone in my self-doubt and second-guessing.

A year ago Big Daddy accepted a new job in a new State. It is not fun starting over again. I miss my mommy friends. As the kids get older your life moves faster. We are past the playgroup age. It is harder to meet and connect with other moms when you only have time for a quick hello as you rush off to the next activity or appointment.

I sure miss my Thursday morning get-togethers. The days of joining my friends with Starbucks in one hand and an occupied car seat in the other.

I miss my playgroup of days gone by, too. A lot. A whole lot.

By the way, I love all the photos you use on your blog. Where do you get them? Google image searches?

Yes, I use image google searches.

Ironically, it was one of my old playgroup friends who told me about them! :)
